Advocating for Increased Special Education Resources, Screening and Identification
Battle Ground Public Schools (BGPS) offers early childhood developmental screenings for children ages 3–5 and provides special education services for eligible students up to age 21. As a board director, I will advocate for regular screenings at key transition points and ensure parents understand referral pathways. I will also promote increased parental education on Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), IEPs, and 504 Plans with community outreach and information sessions to reduce stigma and improve equity. These efforts will help identify students’ needs earlier, ensure appropriate support, and foster greater inclusion and academic success for all students.
Advocating for Increased Mental Health Resources, Prevention, and Intervention
BGPS has advanced mental health support by placing counselors in every school, collaborating with local providers, and obtaining a federal grant to expand services. As a board director, I will advocate for more school-based mental health staff, screenings, staff training, and stronger community partnerships. I will also encourage student and family engagement through regular forums and by promoting available mental health resources. Expanding these resources and early intervention leads to improved student well-being, higher engagement, better attendance, fewer disciplinary issues, and greater academic achievement.
Advocating for Student-Centered, Hands-On, and Project-Based Learning
BGPS frequently updates its curricula with input from teachers, students, and the community, emphasizing active, project-based, and inclusive learning methods. The district is piloting new social-emotional learning (SEL) and character education programs, as well as project-based approaches in subjects like history and STEM. As a school director, I will advocate for innovative, student-centered strategies and support involving parents, students, and community members in curriculum review for greater relevance and transparency. These initiatives aim to enhance academic achievement, foster essential life skills, and equip students with real-world problem-solving abilities and marketplace readiness.
